Every cart connects to a payment gateway a little differently. Here's how a high-risk merchant account plugs into each one, and what the platform charges for it.
Shopify
Shopify Payments follows its payment processor's prohibited list, so many high-risk products, like CBD, vape and kratom, need a third-party provider. Shopify works with approved third-party payment apps and external providers like Authorize.net, and charges a third-party fee by plan: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus. See high-risk merchant accounts for Shopify.
High-risk payment gateway for WooCommerce
WooCommerce has no platform fee for outside gateways. You add a gateway plugin, like the official Authorize.net extension, which supports WooCommerce Subscriptions for recurring billing. Your WooCommerce store keeps its checkout and WordPress dashboard; only the payment gateway changes. It's the most flexible cart for high-risk stores.
BigCommerce
BigCommerce charges an open payment provider fee on gateways outside its embedded list: 2% on Core, 1% on Growth, 0.6% on Scale and nothing on Performance. Factor it into your costs before you switch.
Adobe Commerce (Magento)
Magento's built-in options are Payment Services, PayPal and Braintree. Other gateways connect through Marketplace extensions or a custom API integration, with no platform fee.
Wix
Wix supports more than 100 payment providers alongside Wix Payments, and which ones you can use depends on your country. Check the provider list before you build your store there.
Custom stores and APIs
Custom-built stores connect directly to our gateway API, with hosted payment fields or a redirect that keeps card data off your servers.
